How To Use the Cards

1. Hold up the picture side.
2. Name it together, e.g. 'car'
3. Say the sound, e.g. 'ar'
4. Turn the card over, to the letter side. Say the sound again. e.g. 'ar'

Guidance and Strategies

Students need to know the sounds and names of the alphabet before learning the phonic sound pack.

Do not try to learn all the cards at once. Suit the pace of learning to the ability of the student.

Making up a saying, action or rhyme can help make a sound card more memorable.

Junior students: It is important to follow the phonic sound order (shown above) and learn only one stage of

cards at a time. Do not move on until all the cards in a stage have been mastered.

Senior students: A student that is quick to learn and working at a relatively high level can be given the

whole phonic pack at once.

Extension Activities

Playing games with the cards is a really effective way to learn the sounds.

Game 1: Count Down

To win the card the student has to say the sound before the card holder can count to ten. If the student knows the sound well, the holder should count really quickly. If the student finds the sound difficult to remember, the card holder should count slowly. The player with the most cards at the end wins.

Game 2: Grab

Lay all the cards on a flat surface, sound side up. The teacher says a sound and the first player to ‘grab' it keeps the card. To make it more fun, the students start with their hands under the table, behind their backs, or on their heads! Watch out for cards make more than one sound. Sometimes there will be several cards that make the same sound grab them all.

• Waning Moon: following a Full Moon, the waning moon gives us time to go within and reflect on where we are and where we are going. This is the moment just before the rebirth and helps us to reflect on our emotions and who we are. Revelations can occur and our intuition can be strong.

If you want to make use of the Full Moon energy in your life, here is a ritual you can perform-

Full Moon Letting Go Ritual

This ritual is perfect for letting go and releasing all that no longer serves you.

You will need:

• A small bowl of water
• 1 blue or white candle
• Paper and pen
• Sage for burning

1. Find a sacred space, preferably under the light of the Full Moon where you will not be disturbed
2. Smudge your aura and your area using the sage or any other cleansing medium that you prefer
3. Light the candle and give thanks to Mother Moon, have your bowl of water near the candle
4. Write down on the paper all that no longer serves you or things that you want to release. This could include attitudes, emotions, relationship ties, illness, habits, addictions, etheric cords etc.
5. State what you want to release aloud and take a deep breath, as you exhale imagine whatever you want to let go floating away
6. Place the paper into the candle (be safe!) and watch it burn. When it becomes too hot to touch, drop it into the water.
7. Once the paper has become soggy, throw the water and paper into the garden. If your paper doesn't dissolve you can also throw it away.
8. Be sure to thank the Moon and the Universe after your ritual is completed
